Documentary ShortSpiritual Cyphers: Hip Hop and the Church
Documentary ShortThe year 2023 marks Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary, however, not much has been explored concerning how Hip Hop culture intersects with spirituality. Today Hip Hop has become a global phenomenon and African American women were a part of that history, but in the beginning, there was resistance. What similarities to the Blues and Jazz of generations past does Hip Hop share with the Church and the youth? In the late 1980s and 1990s, the Black Church was a staple of the African American community, and Hip Hop, an African American creation, clashed. Spiritual Cyphers: Hip Hop and the Church is the first installment in the documentary film series exploring this era with a visit to the Black Christian Church where correlations of the elements of Hip Hop between the Emcee are made to the Preacher, the Deejay as the Worship Music, the Graffiti (the art and style) as Black Church aesthetics, the B-Boy/B-Girl as the Liturgical Dance Ministry, and Knowledge as the Word of God (Bible). Culture penetrates all…
We find liberation becomes a "dance" toward deliverance that sheds light on this untold story of American History.

Documentary ShortNAMBA: A Japanese American's Incarceration and Life of Resilience
Social Justice ProjectsWe learn the story of May Namba, narrated by her granddaughter Miyako Namba. Beginning with the summer of 1941, she chronicles the bombing of Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt’s executive order that sent Japanese Americans to prison camps, and the impact it had on those Americans.
May was incarcerated in Minidoka, one of 10 such prisons. Miyako narrates as May lost her job and her father was taken away. Yet throughout the journey, we witness May’s incredible resilience and how it forges a life of service.
May goes on to become an community organizer, working collaboratively to create community events and spaces for healing and justice. She mentors many local youths who go on to become the leaders they are today.
In the film, May, Miyako and other members of the Namba family travel to the Minidoka site. Miyako struggles to walk May’s journey. She imagines what she would bring with her in the limited luggage allowed, makes a mattress of hay in a horse stall for a bed, and visits many of the locations that shaped May’s life.
May Namba’s patriotism, resilience, perseverance, and leadership is an inspiration for us all.

The Draft
Narrative Short FilmIn a future world under strict population control, a strong, independent, fertile Kate is drafted to have a baby. Unlike her best friend Jessica, Kate doesn’t want to be a mother and suffers. Her personal choice is taken away at each step and when she wants to gift her opportunity away to Jessica, she cannot because her fertility is a commodity and the presumed fairness of a lottery is society’s way of maintaining equality and exerting control. While the two best friends are ripped apart, unable to follow their dreams, they succeed in awakening the audience and reveal the faults in the system.
THE DRAFT is meant to evoke a debate around the lacking freedom of choice women still face today. A woman should have complete control over her body but we can be scorned for not doing what others - and society - consider to be our duty, our purpose as women. This film is about what can happen when our right to be childfree by choice is taken from us. Equality demands that we as women and men respect each other’s individuality and choices, whether that’s becoming a mother or not.

Music VideosWhere Can We Live In Peace?
Documentary FeatureThis documentary about the Central American migrant crisis – was filmed in the ABBA migrant shelter which was founded by Pastor Ignacio Ramirez in Celaya, one of Mexico’s most dangerous towns.
The migrants ride illegally on freight trains (La Bestia.) Often there are accidents, and they lose limbs. Their dreams are shattered. The ABBA shelter is unique in that it looks after all those who have suffered accidents. The amputees have even formed a band. Pastor Ignacio is now hoping to acquire a large piece of land which can be a sanctuary for them as they heal. It’s an incredible example of what is possible.
So far 3 rough cut screenings in Mexico of “Where Can We Live in Peace?” have raised $41,000.00 US for workshops (medical, therapeutic, art therapy, digital learning) on the new land so the amputees can learn new skills. Jackson hopes that screenings across the US and Canada will raise more funds.
Director Judy Jackson has made over 100 documentaries about human rights and social justice (for the CBC, TVO, Knowledge network in Canada, and BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the UK.) They have won over 60 international awards. Many have also created ripples of change. For example, a documentary for the BBC, but shown around the world which showed that police in Guatemala City were shooting street children wa
However, this documentary had no budget. It happened like this:
Following personal tragedies Jackson read many books about bereavement.. One book resonated – “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. He lost his fiancée and his parents in a concentration camp. He survived but noticed that those who did best were those who helped others. This led Jackson to pick up a camera, learn to edit, and to make “Where Can We Live in Peace?” about migrants who are forced to leave their homes because of poverty, gang violence and climate change, and are searching for a place where they can bring up their children in peace and safety.
Note: We are still completing a final mix.

From the microscopic to the macroscopic, from the individual, the society, to the universe, and finally back to the individual to focus on the richness of the spiritual world. No matter how the world and technology change and progress, one thing will not change ─ Life needs each other, so that we won’t be alone.

Music VideosWritten in the first person and from his perspective, the lyrics are based on what her idea of the last minutes of her father’s life were and the thoughts that were coming to him in that final hour. We imagined that with a dizzied mind, in an almost dreamlike state, his last thoughts were devoted to them, his family, his wife and two children that he was now leaving behind. There is a sense of guilt, shame, but also a dominating “fact of the matter” telling of what is, leaving the listener to experience a lack of resolve. A glimpse into the void that was created in that fateful moment.

Biking While Black: Continuing to Ride Through Decriminialization, Disenfranchisement & Gentrification
Documentary ShortAn important look at the joys and challenges of biking while Black and the need for a transit future rooted in justice and equity. BIKING WHILE BLACK chronicles the determination of communities and the fight to continue to ride through decriminalization, disenfranchisement, and gentrification.
Long:
Our streets and roads are facing a public health crisis and, as with many other public health crises, Black lives are disproportionately affected. BIKING WHILE BLACK: CONTINUING TO RIDE THROUGH DECRIMINALIZATION, DISENFRANCHISEMENT AND GENTRIFICATION is the much anticipated follow up to the 2021 short film BIKING WHILE BLACK: HOW SAFE ARE BLACK LIVES CYCLING?, which has been shown to audiences world-wide and received won the Best Bicycling Film at the 2022 UN-Habitat Better Cities Film Festival in Katowice, Poland.
In this second episode, filmmaker Yolanda Davis-Overstreet takes us on a journey to explore devastating realities of Black lives on bicycles from community members most impacted, from over-policing to loss of life. We learn from local experts how this problem has been progressing and whether it is getting any better.
As a longtime activist and advocate, Yolanda knows that this problem requires more than action, but also a fountain of hope. Next we hear from community members and faith leaders about their actions to fight for safer streets, going up against city hall and the LAPD.
Finally, we are encouraged by the possibilities when communities stand together. We hear from outdoor enthusiasts across Los Angeles why Black communities are historically left out of so many outdoor activities and the importance of claiming and making safe spaces. There is so much potential for Black joy in cycling and other outdoor activities. Through love, hope and the power of grassroots community involvement, we can make the streets safer for Black lives. Please join us on this ride!
