MATKA / POLKA [MOTHER / POLE] MATKA / POLKA [MOTHER / POLE]

MATKA / POLKA [MOTHER / POLE]

MATKA / POLKA [MOTHER / POLE] is a meditation on what it means to be a woman in today’s Polish society. As a collection of stories – all verbatim – from waiting rooms, gynaecology chairs, abortion clinics, and bedrooms, the documentary bears witness to everyday acts of patriarchy and systemic violence. Adopting a poetic visual language, MATKA / POLKA breaks the taboo around the experiences, emotions and identity of Polish women who have faced the country's strict reproductive policy and social prejudices to make decisions about their own life and body.

DIVR DIVR

DIVR

Rebecca Zhao, Sula Barkin, and McQueen de la Cruz are on top of the world. When their casual-sex app for queer women, DIVR, becomes a breakout hit, the three college buds find themselves hailed as icons of progress, representing the entire queer community in their success. But behind the scenes, things are a little more complicated: Sula has been secretly dating a straight man, McQueen has been hiding a realization about their true gender identity out of fear that it will make their “by queer women, for queer women brand” appear to be a fraud, and Rebecca, who suffers from bipolar disorder, is about to buckle under the pressure.

Icons aren’t supposed to break, or lie, or be anything other than what those they represent want them to be. As the three friends struggle to decide between the roles they play and the realities they live, it becomes clear that nothing--not even the high ground--comes without a cost.
